I was 22, reeling from the end of a 5 year long relationship, stuck in a city where I knew no one and a job I didn't like. He was a new friend, the zaniest, most accomplished, and most interesting person I had ever met. We walked down street after street in a not-so-nice part of town on a warm summer's night, talking about everything you could imagine. I wanted to advance in my current job, change careers, I wanted to set up passive income streams, I wanted to be a content creator...all these hazy dreams lay vaguely within my grasp, but with no clear direction I never moved towards them. My days filled up, one after another, week after week, month after month. I thought I needed more self discipline and had to build that up first. He said, "Pick one thing." ?? "No, seriously, I am incapable of doing more than one thing at once. Pick one." For reference, this guy had risen to the top of two totally separate careers and spun up a profitable small business before most people his age even graduated college. To top it off, he was in shape, had amazing breadth of knowledge, and a wonderful social circle. He seemed like the kind of person who did everything. He repeated firmly: "Pick a thing, finish it, and then do the next thing. But only do one thing at once." This was not easy for me to do. It took me ages just to choose what to order from a menu. More vitally, I was already anxious about being behind, and I what if the one thing I chose didn't pan out? He said sometimes that happens, but it's the cost of making progress. I decided to give up on my current job and on the career change and focus fully on content creation. I started writing on Twitter and Substack, learning everything I could about how to write things people actually wanted to read. And my life transformed more in 3 months than it had in the year prior. So I tell you again: pick one thing. Love, Divs P.S. I'm still figuring out what kind of emails would be most valuable for you! Would you prefer a weekly journal detailing the actual ups and downs/ learning lessons of someone trying to set up passive income streams? If enough people reply yes, I'll start. If you have any other ideas, let me know, please! |
